Term 2 Assessment Reflection

Term 2 Assessment Reflection

During the time of Apartheid, the black population of South Africa were served a lot of injustices. In the film THE POWER OF ONE, directed by John G.Avildsen we can see what it would have been like to live there during that time. In a Scene were two of the characters Pk and Gideon are going for a run through the slums we can see the unfair treatment towards black people of South Africa. Some of the techniques used in this scene are diegetic sound, camera angles, dialogue and shots. These film techniques helped us understand the importance of every scene. This move has a strong impact on the audience.

First, In this scene diegetic sound in favoured over the non-diegetic sound.  We can hear the footsteps of the runners, the sound of pickaxes hitting the ground, we can also hear the people voices under Pk and Gideon voices. With faded non-diegetic music playing in the background. I think the director, Avildsen favoured diegetic more because he wanted us to focus on the conversation the two fighters where having instead of the sounds around them. This conversation explained how missed treated the black people of South Africa were. This helps us understand what the black people of South Africa went through during Apartheid. We formed our own opinions about the man in charge. We can link this scene the ending scene where we watch as Pk and Gideon walk towards the sunset, we can see what type of men they really are.

Secondly, Avildsen uses a few Camera shots/angles. For example, at the start of the scene, we can see a two-shot. A mid-shot follows them throughout the scene, we also see a deep focus shot as they run back into the scene we see this multiple times. I think the purpose of these shots were to show a wider angle of the slums, so we could see how the black Africans were living. Once again this helps us understand what was happening during the Apartheid and how hard it was on the blacks. The importance of this scene is that unfair treatment just like this is happening to millions of people of all age and race around the world.

In conclusion, The Power of One directed by John G. Avildsen was a great movie with a powerful message. The use and choice of visual and verbal techniques in ever scene made the movie breathtaking. My favourite part was at the end of the movie when Gideon and Pk walked off into the sunset.

Reflection
I am proud that I finished the assessment on time to the level I was aiming for. I fell like I can now link and describe my examples using details and I even put in work at home.
This time I wrote the bare minimum, next time I could improve on writing more.
One thing I enjoyed about the film is that it shared the message of hope and show us how one person can have such a big impact on something.
One thing I found challenging about learning film was that a white man was chosen to save the black race from the other white people
One thing I learned that I will use the next time I write an essay is to use a template to help me write.
I found the template useful and they really helped me.
